garden spirit mission and values

Spiralseed - towards a Mission and Values statement

Spiralseed is a small independent publishing venture devoted to producing literature, artwork, information and goods concerning issues such as land use, veganism, permaculture, ecology, organic gardening and so forth from a libertarian and positive perspective. Our aim is to produce material which is at once high quality, affordable and accessible. Our publications strive to use clear, reader- friendly and jargon- free language along with high visual/graphics content.

'VEGAN - PUNK - PERMACULTURE'

This by-line was applied to Land And Liberty (the previous incarnation of Spiralseed) some years ago by the independant small press reviews magazine ‘BY-PASS’ - it seemed a reasonable summary of what we are about and the values we wish to reflect in what we are trying to do and how we are trying to do it, so it stuck....

VEGAN; Going beyond striving to survive causing the least suffering possible- instead promoting and living with compassion for our fellow Earth Citizens, human and non- human, as well as using our resources and land intelligently. Tolstoy once said that whilst there are slaughterhouses there will be battlefields. We don’t believe it is beyond the ingenuity and creativity of peoplekind when used in positive ways to build a world where we can do away with both.

PUNK; Punk as an attitude, not a style of music or hair cut. Punk as Do It Yourself - take control of your life and don’t accept the bullshit. Punk as part of a tradition of People’s Protest that can be traced back to the dawn of oppression, but also presents intelligent and positive solutions for the new millennium.

PERMACULTURE; Turning problems into solutions, cycling energy and skills, making links and connections, taking personal responsibility - Spiralseed promotes the creation of sustainable human communities by working with, not against, nature’s patterns. Our practices are underpinned by the Permaculture ethics of

Earthcare
Peoplecare
Fairshares

Examples;

Earthcare (eg, we aim to ensure that our publications are produced by printers that use recycled paper, eco-friendly inks and other processes, and that others we work with share an ethical basis that reflects our own. In addition, an important aim of Spiralseed is to develop a ‘Tree Tax’ levy, which will ensure that a share of any profits generated will be channelled into tree planting, reaforestation or permaculture projects)

Peoplecare (Spiralseed intend to be businesslike and professional. However we also aim to deal with others, be they customers, suppliers or distributors, on a human scale that is about trust, creating win-win situations and building beneficial connections. We want to put people, and our relationships with them, before profits.)

Fairshares (Spiralseed does not aim to rip people off. This includes ourselves; we aim to sell what we produce at a fair price, but do believe we deserve to be valued for the work and energy that we put in. Spiralseed also aims to be self- supporting, and in the longer term become a sustainable and ethical source of income, and eventually be in a position to reinvest our surpluses into supporting other ethically based ventures.)

Others that we have worked with so far that have ethical policies include;

Naturewise

Dial House/Crass Agenda

Treesponsibility

Footprint Workers Co-operative

Cool Temperate Nurseries

The Permaculture Association
